There’s something quietly joyful about cosmos. The blooms lean peachy-orange, pink, white, sometimes deep crimson — all catching the breeze like a light, shimmering dance. I find they have this ease, barely asking for fuss, just filling the garden with their gentle colour and a few careless petals scattered on the path beneath.

That… is the thing about cosmos. They’re generous without demanding much. For us growing in the UK, that’s magic. The kind of plant you can trust to brighten a border, fill a vase, and still have enough seeds left over to try again next year.

Cosmos Apricotta Flower

I usually start cosmos seeds indoors from March or April — a sunny windowsill is ideal. Make sure the compost is light and free draining, just moist enough to encourage germination. Seeds generally take between 7 to 14 days to show first signs of life, sometimes a little longer if it’s cool.

If you’re short on indoor space, direct sowing outdoors works, but it’s better to wait until late April or May, once the risk of frost has passed. Sow thinly into prepared soil, no more than 1cm deep. Space young seedlings about 20 to 30cm apart — they like room to move, air around their stems helps prevent mildew.

Cosmos Pinching Out Seedlings

Cosmos are forgiving, but not indifferent. They like regular watering until established — enough to keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. After that, they’re fairly drought tolerant, especially once they settle into the summer heat.

Staking can be helpful, particularly for taller varieties that risk toppling in heavy wind or rain. And don’t underestimate the power of deadheading — pinch off spent flowers regularly, and they’ll keep producing fresh blooms well into autumn.

At Herboo, cosmos have a special place. We offer a range of varieties suited to different tastes and spaces in the garden. Whether it’s the soft, buttery shade of Apricotta, the crisp clean white of Purity, or the seashell pinks in our Seashell range, each seed packet represents a promise of colour and ease.
